Community Services

National Anxiety & Depression Screening Day—May 7, from 4 to 6 pm.  Sponsored by PHC, Putnam Family & Community Services and the Mental Health Association in Putnam County, there will be confidential screenings with psychiatric professionals, along with an educational video and available literature.  The screenings will be followed by a presentation and question and answer session. PACE:  People with Arthritis Can Exercise—PHC’s Outpatient Rehabilitation Services offer an ongoing exercise program designed specifically for people with arthritis and designed by the Arthritis Foundation that uses gentle activities to help increase joint flexibility and range of motion and to help maintain muscle strength and increase overall stamina.  Mondays from 1 to 2 pm and Fridays from 11 am to 12 pm, PHC Birthing Center Conference Room.  For information, call 845-279-5711, Ext. 2473.  $5 FEE PER SESSION

Will and Estate Planning Seminar—Expert  speakers at the seminar, cosponsored by PHC and Merrill Lynch, explain the tax advantages of planning your estate and having a will.  April 17, 7 pm, 3rd Floor Conference Room, 664 Stoneleigh Avenue Building on PHC grounds.  For information, call 845-279-5711, Ext. 3583. Support Groups

Better Breathers Club—Monthly support group offering information and education open to anyone with chronic asthma, COPD or other breathing disorders.  Friends and family welcome. Facilitated by PHC Licensed Respiratory Therapist.  Meets in the PHC Café Classrooms from 4 to 6 pm, monthly on a Tuesday during April, May and Junel.  Call 845-279-5711, Ext. 2633 for dates. FREE

Bereavement Support Group—Hospice Care in Westchester & Putnam, Inc., and PHC offer a Bereavement Support Group, the fourth Monday of each month, from 6:30 to 8 pm, at PHC.  The group is professionally facilitated and provides an opportunity for bereaved persons to learn ways of coping with the feelings and changes that occur after the loss of a loved one, as well as experiencing the strength and hope that mutual support can provide.  Registration is required.  Call Chris Ulrich, Bereavement Coordinator, at Hospice Care at 914-666-4228, Ext. 492. Diabetes Support Group—Learn how to keep your diabetes under control and live a healthier life.  Registration is recommended by calling 845-279-5711, Ext. 6263.  Meets monthly (April 7, May 6, June 10)  at 6 pm, PHC Café Classrooms. FREE

Mental Health Support Group for Families & Friends—Sponsored by the Mental Health Association, in cooperation with PHC, the group meets every Thursday at 7 pm in the fourth floor Partial Program area of the hospital.  For information, call 845-278-7600, Ext. 231. FREE

Multiple Sclerosis Support Group—Offered by the MS Society in cooperation with PHC, the group meets the second Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm at PHC.  Registration required.  Call 914-694-1655. FREE

Women Moving Through Breast Cancer—Multi-week healing program to help women understand the connection between health of body, mind and spirit; includes journaling to help women to claim a more authentic life direction.  Fridays, March 28 through May 16, 1-3 pm, PHC Conference Room C. SCREENINGS

Breast, Cervical and Colorectal Cancer Screenings — Ongoing programs, cosponsored by the Putnam County Healthy Living Partnership and PHC, offer no-cost mammograms, clinical breast exams, pelvic exams and pap smears for uninsured women (age guidelines apply), and free colorectal cancer screening kits for anyone over 50 years of age. Special breast and cervical screening to be held April 9 at PHC, beginning at 4 pm. Call 845-278-6558 for appointments and eligibility and future dates. FREE

Skin Cancer Screening—Sponsored by the American Cancer Society and PHC, the screening consists of an examination by a dermatologist.  Registration is required.  Usually held in June.  For information, call 845-628-2003.  FREE

Community Education

AARP Driver Safety Program—Cosponsored by PHC and the Putnam County Office for the Aging, this 8-hour course is a refresher of New York State driving regulations and self-assessment of age-related changes that may affect driving ability.  Completion of the course results in a 10% reduction in liability and collision insurance premiums and a reduction of up to 4 points from your driving record.  You must be 50 years of age or over to take the course though you need not be a member of AARP.  Registration required by calling 845-225-1034.  $10 FEE

Brainstorming About Alzheimer’s Disease—An Interactive Seminar—Sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association: Hudson Valley/Rockland/ Westchester, NY Chapter, the Putnam County Office for the Aging Caregivers Task Force and Putnam Hospital Center, this program will cover various aspects of Alzheimer’s Disease including new research, the next steps after diagnosis, caregiver support, loss and coping.  May 31, 8:30 am-2:30 pm, William Koehler Friendship Center, Mahopac.  Registration is required by calling 845-878-9890.  FREE

Community CPR—If a cardiac arrest happened to your loved one, would you know how to perform life-saving CPR?  Classes in adult, child and infant CPR are offered for individuals and groups.  Call 845-279-5711, Ext. 6263, for information and fees.

Cosmetic Surgery:  Is It for You?  Board certified plastic surgeon Robert Bibi, MD, will discuss cutting edge techniques including laser peels, injectibles and surgical procedures.  A question and answer period will follow.  May 7, 6:30 pm.  PHC Café Classrooms.  Registration is required by calling 845-279-5711, Ext. 6263.  FREE

Diabetes Self Management Program—Enables individuals with diabetes to learn self care skills that will promote better management of their diabetes treatment regimen.  A certified Diabetes Nurse Educator, along with a Registered Dietitian, offer individual or group instruction to those persons newly diagnosed with diabetes or those who would like a review. This program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association. For information, call 845-279-5711, Ext. 2779.

ENCARE (Emergency Nurses Care)—National program developed by Emergency Nurse C.A.R.E. to educate students and parents about underage alcohol use and the tragic consequences of drinking and driving.  A slide show and presentation can be given to your school, P.T.O., youth or civic group.  Program is sponsored by PHC through a grant from United Way of Westchester and Putnam.  Call 845-279-5711, Ext. 2702, for information.  FREE

Infertility:  From Diagnosis to Treatment—Are you trying to conceive?  In this seminar, board certified reproductive endocrinologist and director of Westchester Reproductive Medicine Rachel Bennett, MD, will review the various conditions that can lead to difficulty conceiving, how to diagnose these conditions and the treatments that can lead to successful conception and pregnancy.  There will also be an individual question and answer session with Dr. Bennett at the end of the presentation.  Wednesday, April 30, 6:30 pm.  PHC Café Classrooms.  Registration is required by call ing 845-279-5711, Ext. 6263.  FREE

Total Joint Class—Ongoing classes for those having or considering a total hip or knee replacement at PHC.  Speakers from the ambulatory surgery unit, pre-admission testing, nursing, case management and physical therapy will help the patient learn what to expect both before and after surgery.  Meets in the PHC Café Classrooms on the second Tuesday of every month from 2 to 4 pm and the last Thursday of the month from 4 to 6 pm.  For more information and to register, please call 845-279-5711, Ext.  2482.  Patients are welcome to bring a guest or caregiver.  FREE

Childbirth and Parenting Classes

Prepared Childbirth Classes—Designed to cover all aspects of labor and delivery, including the Lamaze method and cesarean section information.  Recommended for mothers in the last trimester of their pregnancy.  One-day course from 9 am to 5 pm. Registration required.  Call 845-279-5711, Ext. 2516, for  registration.  Call for dates.$175 FEE FOR ONE-DAY COURSE; $25 DEPOSIT.

Early Pregnancy Classes—Designed to help get off to a good start in the early months of pregnancy; includes information on safe usage of medications, personal care and beauty products; controversial foods; dealing with discomforts. May 17, June 21 and July 26, 9 to 11 am.  Ext. 2510.  FREE

Post-Delivery Breastfeeding Assistance—Meet with breastfeeding coordinators to discuss questions, concerns and assist with breastfeeding in the post-partum period.  Call for dates and times. Ext. 2511.  FREE
